Prototyping

A prototype is the first honest conversation between your idea and the real world. Rapid prototyping is the practice of getting to that conversation fast, using CAD modelling and 3D printing to produce a physical, testable version of a design in days rather than months. It's the service Nexform was built on, with over 670 prototypes through our Essex workshop and counting.
More than you might think. A prototype can be a rough form study you hold in your hand to check the size feels right. It can be a fully functional component with working threads, hinges and snap-fits. It can be a visual model, painted and finished for a pitch, a photoshoot or an investor meeting. Each one answers a different question, and knowing which question you're asking is where we usually start.
That's the real value of a prototyping service: not the printing, but the thinking. When you send us an idea, we help you work out what needs proving first, then build the version that proves it.
It starts with a model. If you have CAD, brilliant, send it over in STEP, STL, OBJ or DWG. If you don't, that's genuinely fine. We regularly work from sketches, photographs, concept drawings and napkin diagrams. Our in-house designers handle CAD modelling, parametric design and 3D rendering, so a drawing on paper can become a manufacturable file without you touching any software.
Then we choose the process. Robust functional parts usually run on our industrial FDM machines in engineering-grade materials. Fine detail and smooth surfaces call for resin printing. Some prototypes combine both, plus wood or metal elements where the design demands it.
Then we build, and you test. Most prototypes are in your hands within 3 to 5 working days. You check the fit, the feel, the function. Something's not right? That's the prototype doing its job. We revise the model and run the next iteration, and because there's no tooling involved, each round costs days rather than weeks.
Because changes are cheap on screen, affordable in plastic and painful in production. A £100 prototype that exposes a design flaw saves a five-figure manufacturing mistake. It also does quieter work: a physical object gets stakeholders aligned, wins client sign-off and makes an investor pitch land in a way renders never quite manage.
Prototyping at Nexform isn't a dead end that stops at a single model. Because we also run low volume manufacturing, the same file that produced your prototype can produce your first fifty units, with no handover to a new supplier and no starting again. Concept, iteration, production, one workshop.
We support rapid prototyping for clients across the UK, from London design studios to engineering teams in the north, all handled from Essex with everything shipped. One-to-one support comes as standard, and there's no minimum order beyond a £50 order value.
Have an idea that needs to exist? Send us whatever you've got and let's build the first version.
