How late can we start and still make a show?

For a single presentable unit from an existing concept, four to five weeks is workable. From a blank sheet, eight to ten. Below four weeks we would be making a model rather than designing a product, and we will say that rather than take the money.

What gets sacrificed when a programme is compressed?

Usually the things nobody sees at a show: internal architecture, service access, design for manufacture and cost engineering. Those get done afterwards. What we protect is the outside, the size, the feel and anything a visitor will touch, because that is what the date is for.

Should the unit work or only look right?

That depends who is looking. A buyer wants to hold it and see the finish. An investor often wants to see one function work. Trying to make everything work in the time available is where these programmes fail, so pick the one thing and make that convincing.

Can you make several units for a stand?

Yes, and it is worth it. One handled unit takes a beating over three days, and a spare removes the worst moment of a show. Non-functional copies for a display wall cost a fraction of the hero unit and make a range look like a range.

What happens after the show?

The proper work starts, with the feedback from three days of people picking it up. That is the most useful design input you will get, and it is worth capturing while it is fresh. We plan the post-show phase before the show rather than after it.

Can you deliver to the venue?

Yes, or to you first, which we usually prefer so you see it before it is on a stand. Packing for a show is worth doing properly, because a prototype that arrives damaged on the Sunday cannot be remade by Monday morning.
