How do you decide what size a grip should be?

From anthropometric data, which gives hand sizes across a population rather than one figure. We design to cover most of it, usually the fifth to ninety-fifth percentile, then test the extremes with printed handles. The data gets you close and the prototypes settle it.

Do you test with real people?

Yes, and the more varied the better. Printed prototypes go to a mixed group rather than a design team, because a design team has already learned how the product works. Older users and anyone with reduced grip strength find the problems fastest.

How much does opening force matter?

More than almost anything else on a consumer product, because it is the first thing that happens. A closure taking real effort produces returns, damaged packaging and a bad first impression. We set a target force early and check it on prototypes rather than assuming.

Can you design for users with reduced dexterity?

Yes, and it rarely costs anything. Larger targets, lower forces, features that can be operated with a closed fist or one hand, and nothing requiring a pinch grip. It usually makes the product better for everyone, which is the argument that wins internally.

What about text and label sizes?

Set from viewing distance and contrast rather than from what fits. Moulded-in text is often the worst offender, because it has no contrast at all. We will tell you when a label needs to be printed or filled rather than embossed, which is a cost decision worth making early.

Is this worth doing on an industrial product?

Often more so. An operator repeats an action hundreds of times a shift, so force, posture and reach turn into fatigue and eventually into injury claims. The design changes are small. The difference over a year of shifts is not.
