What is a product platform?

A shared set of parts and interfaces that several products are built on. The customer sees different models. Underneath, most of the engineering, tooling and assembly is the same. It is how vehicle makers work and it scales down to a range of three products perfectly well.

Can we build a platform from products we already sell?

Sometimes, and it is worth checking before designing a new one. We compare the existing models and look for parts that are almost the same, because those can often be consolidated into one. Where the products are too different, a platform starts at the next generation.

Does a platform limit what the range can do?

It constrains it deliberately, which is the point and also the risk. Constrain too hard and every model feels like a compromise. We define the boundaries with you at the start, including which future variants have to fit, so the platform is not outgrown in a year.

How do you decide which parts are shared?

By what the customer notices and what the engineering demands. Structure, power, fixings and internal layout are usually shared. Panels, controls, colours and anything defining the model are usually not. The interesting arguments happen in the middle, and we would rather have them early.

Is it more expensive to design than a single product?

The first one costs more, sometimes half as much again. The second model costs a fraction of what it would have. The break-even is usually at the second or third variant, so a platform makes sense if you know a range is coming and not if you do not.

Can you design the variants as well as the platform?

Yes, and it is usually one piece of work with stages. Platform first, then each variant as its own quoted phase. You can also take the platform and do the variants in-house, which some clients prefer once the architecture is settled and understood.
