How accurate is a cost estimate at concept stage?

Within maybe twenty per cent early on, tightening as the design firms up. That is accurate enough to reject an approach that is double the target, which is what the estimate is for. We show the assumptions so you can challenge them rather than presenting a single figure.

What usually drives cost on a product like ours?

Part count, tooling, assembly minutes, material volume and finishing, roughly in that order for most consumer and light industrial products. Bought-in components often dominate on anything electronic. We break yours down early, because the answer is different for every product we see.

Can you design for a cheaper process?

Yes, and choosing the process is part of designing to cost. The right answer depends on volume, so a product at five thousand a year is designed differently from one at five hundred thousand. Tell us the real volume rather than the hoped-for one.

What if the target is not achievable?

We say so, with the figures, as early as we can see it. Sometimes the target was set against a competitor making a hundred times the volume, which no amount of design will close. Knowing that in week three is worth a great deal more than finding out in month six.

Do you include tooling in the cost model?

Yes, amortised over the volume you give us, because a part is only cheap at a quantity. We show the unit cost at several volumes so you can see where the numbers break. That is often the most useful page in the whole model.

Can you review an existing design against a target?

Yes, as a shorter piece of work. We cost the current design, identify where the money is and propose changes with a saving against each. You then decide which are worth making. It is quicker than a redesign and usually finds most of the gap.
