Product Design

What is product design? Nexform's route from idea to manufacturable product

Product design is the work between an idea and a manufacturable object. Here is how our designers take sketches and concepts into precise CAD and beyond.

Product design is the work that happens between "I have an idea" and "I'm holding it in my hand". It covers how a product looks, how it works, how it's used and, crucially, how it gets made. At Nexform, product design is where most projects begin: our in-house designers and engineers take rough concepts, sketches and part-formed ideas and turn them into precise, manufacturable 3D models.

The parts of product design people don't see

The visible part of product design is the shape, the aesthetic that makes something feel considered rather than cobbled together. The invisible part is the engineering underneath: wall thicknesses that won't warp, tolerances that let parts fit together, material choices that survive real use, and geometry that can actually be produced without the cost spiralling.

Good product design holds both at once. A beautiful product that can't be manufactured is a rendering. A manufacturable product nobody wants to pick up is a missed opportunity. Our job as product designers is to land you in the overlap.

What our product design service includes

CAD modelling and digital design. Every product ends up as a precise 3D model. Our CAD designers build them from whatever you bring us, whether that's a hand sketch, a photograph, reference products or a written brief. If you're searching for a CAD designer to take your idea further, this is the core of what we do.

Parametric and generative design. We build models intelligently, so a change to one dimension flows through the whole design. That means iterating is fast and exploring variations doesn't mean starting over.

3D rendering and visualisation. Before anything is made, you see photorealistic renders of exactly what you're getting. Renders also work hard beyond approval: clients use them for pitches, pre-orders and marketing while the physical product is still in development.

Design for manufacture. Because we prototype and manufacture in the same workshop, we design with production in mind from the first sketch. No handing your files to a factory that immediately sends them back with problems.

Who uses it?

First-time inventors with an idea and nothing else. Businesses updating a legacy product that's showing its age. Agencies who need a concept engineered into something buildable. Engineers who can define a part's function but want help with its form. You don't need a company, a budget the size of a house or any CAD experience, many of our best projects started as a photo and a paragraph.

Design that flows straight into making

The advantage of designing with Nexform is what happens next. The same team that models your product can prototype it in days, refine it with you through as many iterations as it takes, and then produce it in low volumes without tooling. Design, prototype, manufacture, one thread from start to finish, with one point of contact throughout.

We work with clients across the UK from our Essex base, from London startups to established manufacturers, and everything begins the same way: with the idea you already have.

Got a product in your head? Let's get it into CAD, and then into the world.
