We build them as separate things, because they are. An appearance model gets printed on the resin machines, filled, sanded and wet sprayed so it photographs and feels right. A functional part gets built in the material and orientation that suits the load, unfinished if that is what serves the test. Two parts usually cost less than one compromise and answer both questions properly.

What is the difference between an appearance model and a functional prototype?

An appearance model exists to be looked at and held. It is finished, sprayed and usually built without regard to the real internals. A functional prototype exists to be tested, so material, wall thickness and build direction are chosen for load rather than for looks.

Can one part do both?

Sometimes, on simple products, and we will say when. The compromise usually shows in the finish, because a part built for strength has a build direction that leaves visible layer lines on the wrong face. On anything going in front of a customer, two parts is the better answer.

How quickly can a prototype be made?

Three to five working days is standard, and faster on simple geometry or when we already have the model. Finishing is what takes the time on an appearance model, so a raw functional part is often ready sooner. Tell us the date and which type you need.

How close is a prototype to the production part?

In shape and size, very close. In material behaviour it depends on what production will be. A printed part is not a moulded one, so impact, creep and long term strength all differ. We will tell you which test results transfer and which do not.

Can you make several versions to compare?

Yes, and it is cheap once the model exists. Three grip diameters or two button layouts cost little more than one, and comparing physical versions settles arguments that renders will not. Ask for the variants at the start so they are built together.

Is our design kept confidential?

Yes. We sign NDAs as a matter of routine and much of our prototyping work is under one. Nothing appears in our portfolio, on our site or in a conversation without written permission, and unlaunched products are treated as confidential by default.
